Coronavirus Save Money

I know we are in a desperate situation, and desperate times call for desperate measures. Many government officials have declared a state of emergency, and they have urged citizens to stay indoors to avoid the spread of COVID-19. Amid all the craziness, we can all learn how to save money during the CoronaVirus pandemic.

Do not Buy Unnecessary Grocery

Earlier this week, I went to the supermarket to buy steak, and upon arrival, the entire meat section was empty. I quickly rushed to the next supermarket, only to find nothing there as well. I asked myself, “do people need all that meat in their fridge? Are people buying things out of fear?

Even though government officials have shut down businesses, keep in mind that supermarkets are considered essential. Supermarkets should remain open, at least for now. Do not buy items out of panic, and throw them away because you did not need them in the first place. It is a waste of food. You can use the money towards something else.

Declutter and Sell Items to Save Money

The whole week, we have been doing a lot of cleaning and packing. This is because we are moving from our apartment soon. In doing so, we were able to gather many items we do not need. My husband was able to sell our old dining table after listing it on Facebook Marketplace. While we are stuck at home, we have been able to maximize the time by clearing out things we don’t need and making a profit from them.

Cook at Home Instead of Delivery Services

If you weren’t doing this already, now is a great time to cook all your meals at home. It is much easier to cook at home during the pandemic because of the closing of most bars and restaurants. Of course, you can order take out, but try your best to make your meals and save the extra money. Cooking at home is not only healthy but also helps to keep you on your budget.

Cancel Gym Membership to Save Money

The last time I heard, planet fitness is going to reimburse membership fees for now. I’m not sure what other gyms are doing, but if yours isn’t, now is a good time to cancel that membership, especially if there is no penalty to do so. A gym membership can cost anywhere between 10-50 dollars a month, sometimes more, depending on the perks. So, if you are reading this, and your gym is closed, pick up your phone and cancel it. You can find many YOUTUBE videos like this one to help with home workouts.

Save Money on Transportation

If you are lucky to work from home indefinitely, try saving your daily transportation expenses. I know between my husband and me, we spend about 160 dollars a month on gas. We have been working from home for a week so far. We spend about 40 dollars on transportation per week. By the time the COVID-19 subsides, we will have extra money added to our savings.

  2. These are such important reminders – overbuying groceries has gotten quite ridiculous. So much of what people are buying will go bad before they ever get a chance to eat or use the items. Waste of money and resources!

  4. Nice tips!
I am glad people here are starting to calm down with the hoarding (or hamsteren as we call it here). There are still things missing, but plenty of things are back in stock.
As for the gym membership cancelling, my gym has specifically said NOT to do it for reasons and that they will be working to find something to help out in the end.

  5. Thanks for the reminder that one of the positive sides is saving money, for me esp is petrol money & the money i’d normally spend out and about in places.
It’s really good for you guys timewiae before moving to really sort through all your stuff so you are only taking with you what you really want/need in the new place. Great use of your time! Best of luck with the move too, Helen
